Ford released a bulletin - 22S27- to all dealers to immediately stop demo/delivery for all new Explorers in stock as of 4/19/22. At issue is a possibility of a fractured bolt that causes the differential to separate and cause "severe vibration" rendering the vehicle disabled. No fix was mentioned other than a software update possibly by the end of June 22 (2d qtr). This is serious if dealers are told to stop delivery! I just got mine in the beginning of April. Ford needs to step up and address this to ALL owners and not just dealers. It appears that Ford is waiting for failure of the parts before allowing any repairs. So far, only software is mentioned which supposedly throttles the engine to avoid putting stress on the rear end. This of course does NOT address the physical issue with a fractured bolt. Apparently, Ford redesigned the differential to use only one bolt vs two they had used earlier. Please pursue this as soon as possible with Ford to make them put out an emergency recall to resolve this very serious defect in manufacturing. Normally, recalls are for something that can be addressed eventually based on reported issues. However, there have not been that many incidents. For Ford to issue this notice to dealers indicates the seriousness or expected seriousnes. Thank you for your attention!

4/20/2022

This is my second submission. I will continue to submit to attempt to have NHTSA find out why FORD will only offer a software tweak to fix a very dangerous physical issue with all 20-22 Ford Explorers. Ford provided Advance Notice 22S27 to dealers dated 4/19/22 advising them to STOP delivery of any in stock Explorer due to a possible bolt fracture on the rear subframe which if cracked will disable the vehicle. Their "fix" is a software update that will reduce power to avoid acceleration which will put stress on the bolt. Ford decided to remove the second bolt from all the Explorers which subsequently will put stress on the one bolt they left intact. Ford needs to recall and put that bolt back on the subframe as the vehicle was originally designed to have. Please, please address this issue with Ford to make them fix the physical issue!

Purchased car 5/31/22 from Apple Ford, 8800 Stanford Blvd, Columbia MD 21045. Started hearing sounds of rodent infestation 2 days later. Sporadic scurrying sounds that seemed to be coming from metal frame area above headliner in the car. Have recorded the sounds and attempted to share this verification of infestation with dealership, to no avail. As disabled vet w/anxiety/ptsd, scurrying sounds are unnerving, rodents are known to cause wiring damage which affects vehicle safety, sudden emergence of rodents when operating vehicle is additional safety hazard to myself, my passengers and others. Dealership removed headliner and stated no indication of rodents found. I repeatedly notified dealer the sound is one of clawing/scurrying on metal and that I have video evidence that verifies rodent infestation. So far, there are no warning lights, etc or other symptoms of the problem.

On July 10th, 3:45 pm, after being parked in a parking lot for an hour in the sun, I opened the rear driver side door, the moonroof made a "pop" sound, then glass showered down. The glass popped UP, not down, and we were not in motion. Nor had we heard any impacts while driving at any time previously.

APIM Module failure at 148 miles on a brand new 2022 Explorer XLT. SYNC display went black. No response to touch. No warning lamps or alerts. Radio still plays and can be controlled by steering wheel controls. Contacted dealer and they said to disconnect negative battery terminal for more than 30 minutes. Performed requested action. Display is still dark. No reverse camera or safety (ADAS) functions. Took it to dealer again and they ran diagnostics to determine APIM module failure. So now I have a brand new Explorer with reduced safety features and no center console display. I cannot control any ADAS or radio features. Dealer has no estimated timeline for repair. Dealer also stated that they are getting APIM module failures DAILY.

On four occasions over the past 30 days the vehicle has simply lost power while driving. No acceleration and the vehicle coasts to a stop and will not restart. On a few occasions it restarted after some time. Just shutdown while driving down the road. The third time it happened we took to the dealer and they claimed to fix a fuel pump module. It happened again a few days later. Took it back to the dealer and they claimed it was just low on gas even though it’s happened four times and there was gas in the tank. Took it home from the dealer a second time and simply ran it in the driveway for ten minutes and the engine stopped. Tried a second time and same result. Wouldn’t start again for 10 minutes.

Upon cold start exhaust burns blue smoke. Vehicle was taken to dealership and diagnosed with a bad turbo seal, resulting in motor being removed and turbo replaced on passenger side at 2865 miles. Now a 6439 miles the drives side turbo seal is causing the same issue, blue smoke pouring out of the exhaust on cold starts. Car is driven with care and not abused in anyway. Other owners of the same version of this vehicle with two turbos are also experiencing the same issue. For both environmental and safety reasons, these engines should be recalled and inspected for this premature failure.

The officer turned around and accelerated relatively fast considering the speed and potential to not stop. When the pedal reached its maximum downward position, it just snapped off. While at a gas station I opened the hood to check the oil, and the hood folded backwards far enough to contact, and destroy the windshield. My wife was cleaning the windshield at the time, and narrowly avoided having her hand/forearm severely injured by the hood. This is not supposed to happen. Whatever mechanism that is meant to prevent an incident like this was either defective, or non existent.

7/11/2022

Today, in my 2 month old 2022 Ford Explorer ST. The latch that holds/locks the hood (over engine) broke while driving 25 mph on city street and the hood smashed into my front windshield. I have never opened the hood since purchasing the vehicle and the hood ajar light never lite up until after it smashed into my windshield. I took the car to Ford Service and they are deferring responsibility. Even if I wanted to open the hood, I would have to pull the open lever upwards six inches twice to open (which I never did). And even if I accidently opened the hood, the door ajar light should have turned on, which it did not. This was very scary and I am very fortunate I did not run into another vehicle or object since it blocked all viability.

In late October, 2022, when reversing in my driveway, I hit a tree. The rear camera alert system did not notify me of the presence / closeness of the tree (lived here almost 6 years, should know of tree but heavily rely on the camera and alerts to let me know if I'm too close). On another day, my husband was in the car with me and as I was reversing - he said "your alert didn't go off, this is probably why you hit that tree." I was unaware until today (1/30) that there is an active recall on my car for this issue. I had the damage fixed in November at Gerber Collision Center in Sebastian FL (Micco Rd). The cost of the fix was $2046 out of pocket (did not claim through insurance). Rear-driver side lamp, bumper, quarter panel. Invoice for repairs is included for detail in what all needed to be fixed. Pictures are not great and are after we taped the light on.

1/30/2023

Vehicle is as purchases brand new in august 2022. After a few months when engaging reverse, there is a lag time of 3-10 seconds. The reverse screen in dash does not engage as well. Local dealer “fixed” in February 2023 at roughly 5k miles. Issue has returned. When brought to dealer beginning of May 2023. We were informed they would not work on it as it’s a known issue with no fix. Issue is creating problems when attempting parallel parks, k-turns, parking, anything to do in the road requiring timliness and safe execution of parking. When vehicle has the lag time it is not in gear and wil roll if on an incline.

5/11/2022

During a 2000 mile road trip, the front passenger seatbelt was nearly cut through at the point where the seatbelt exits the tensioner above the passenger's right shoulder. The location of the cut along the length of the webbing aligns with the position of the webbing when the seatbelt was in use by the front passenger. Based upon the location and nature of the cut, it appears that some surface within the assembly was sharp enough to cut through the section of belt. There were no injuries associated with this incident. The vehicle was parked as soon as we reached our destination and no passengers are allowed to sit in the front right passenger seat until the issue is corrected. The seat belt tensioner / pre-tensioner assembly was examined by the Ford Dealership in Taber, AB, Canada on 22 DEC 2022. The dealership confirmed that the issue was a warranty repair, but they were unable to provide a replacement part in the amount of time we had left in Taber as we were still in Transit. When we reached our destination in Pierceland, SK, I ordered the replacement tensioner from / through the nearest Ford dealership (Cold Lake, AB). I have an appointment to have seatbelt assembly replaced tomorrow (27 DEC 2022) at that dealership. The seat belt tensioner assembly

I was backing up at low speed (less than 1 mph) to park by gently letting my foot off the brake to back. I was using the rear backup camera to gauge how far I could go back without striking the vehicle behind me. The screen showed video that I was still several feet away from the vehicle behind me when I felt a sudden bump. I stepped on the brake hard to ensure I was no longer moving but the camera still showed several feet between my rear bumper and the vehicle behind me. I put the vehicle in park and got out to verify that I had struck the vehicle behind me. I had. I returned to the driver’s seat, put the vehicle back in reverse to see what the camera showed and now it appeared on the screen that my bumper was touching the vehicle behind me. The video on the screen had absolutely froze while I was backing, which contributed to me making an error in judgement while backing, causing me to strike the vehicle behind me. The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office (Illinois) completed a crash report. SOPC23-08519

The cruise control suddenly went from the posted speed of 55 mph to 85 mph. This is very concerning! It has happened several times and I can no longer use the cruise controller. When using my Cruise Control the speed jumps up to 75-85 mph without my input. For example, when I set the cruise control to 55 it suddenly jumps up to 75 or 85 mph on its own. This happens when the speed signs on the road change. This past week I used my cruise control for a long trip. I was on a highway that changed the posted speed from 55 to 65 mph. The cruise control suddenly went from the posted speed of 55 mph to 85 mph. This is very concerning! It has happened several times and I can no longer use the cruise controller. I have approximately 5,000 miles on my vehicle .

On [XXX] my 2022 Ford Explorer was involved in a collision during my morning commute to work. On [XXX] while stopped at a stoplight across from Sheetz, with the auto brake hold engaged for a minute or two already, my vehicle accelerated forward into the vehicle in front of me. The impact was so sudden that the driver of the vehicle I collided with thought I had been rear ended. While I had contacted my insurance company (Erie Insurance) regarding the collision, I had also reached out to my service center, Laurel Ford (Windber, PA), concerning the incident. Because of my concerns with the auto brake hold and Copilot system with the collision, they had me bring it in on 16 September to run diagnostics. Later that day on the 16th, I had received a phone call from the service tech letting me know that he did find system error logs approx. 40 minutes prior to the collision. He let me know that he was going to keep diagnosing and will be most likely reaching out to his next level service support. The next day on the 17th, the service technician called me back to let me know that when he reported the issue to his support center he was advised to park the vehicle, not let it be driven, and for the service manager to get with me to file a report (Ford reference # XXX). Since that time, nothing more has happened with my Explorer. I have both the current manufacturer's warranty and Ford Protect warranty. The most recent update from Laurel Ford was that Ford Corporate said a Field Service Engineer needed to evaluate the issue. The Laurel Ford Service Center is no longer getting replies from corporate and has a regional manager involved, with no luck so far. It has been an extreme burden and has been beyond stressful using my wife's car for work, l'm in the military and my base is over 40 miles away, while she relies on friends/family to get to her work and also make sure that both of my kids get to their activities. Purge valve has now failed twice since owning the vehicle (1 year and 5 months old). First purge valve went out when the vehicle was only 4 months old (Oct 2022). Second purge valve went out at 1 year old (June/July 2022). The main concern that I am reaching out for- Drivers side headlight - a small bird flew into the headlight and cracked it. Placed a hole in the headlight, causing water to get in and stop working. There is no way that a headlight should crack from a bird flying into it.

11/30/2023

An alert often shows up on the dashboard "check headlamp system. See manual". This is occasionally associated with one headlamp not working. This happens on and off. The alert spontaneously turns on, may stay for days or weeks and then spontaneously turns off. Ford dealership service were unable to fix this problem. This has happened multiple times since we purchased the car

There’s no accident . The passenger front recliner is stuck in the reclined position ( laying all the way back ). In the seated position , facing forward , the left side of the seat is stuck . The right side near the passenger door wants to come up, but not the left side. The seat is laying down flat in the reclined position . This is a safety issue .

7/1/2024

Seat warning module failed. When unbuckling seatbelt car does not recognize you unbuckled, therefore the airbag system does not recognize which seats are occupied. This would also cause a safety concern as you do not have to buckle the seatbelt with no warning or alert there is an issue. Car has been at Ford dealer for service for a month with them failing to find any other vehicle that they can replicate the problem. This is one Ford dealer, but it should be something that is investigated as it might be easily overlooked. Car has been in the dealership for the last month with no answers from Ford or resolution to the safety issue, following Federal regulations the dealer will not release the car back to us as it has a safety system malfunctioning.

Rear liftgate intermittently and randomly opens when standing or walking near the rear, the rear left, or the rear right of the vehicle. In each situation the key is on my person (pocket or purse) and the key fob is not being engaged in any manner. I purchased my vehicle in January 2022 and it has happened more than a dozen times since I purchased it. I have concerns if it opens and I don't realize it and when my pets are in the back in case they were to jump out. It doesn't seem to matter whether the vehicle is locked or unlocked. It has happened while pumping gas and the vehicle was unlocked, it has happened while walking to the driver side rear passenger door to retrieve an item when the car was locked. On more than one occasion, it has randomly closed on me when standing under the liftgate while removing items from the back of the vehicle and hit me on the head. While researching this problem, it seems to be a common problem with any vehicle that has an electronic liftgate going back many many years. Multiple makes and models have reportedly had the same issue. I don't want it to open while driving as one other person reported as happening to them. The dealership had no idea how to fix the problem.

Since "fixing" my vehicle with retrofitted 2nd row HVAC controls, the 2nd row heating is unable to be controlled from the front, which means if you have a child in a car seat who can't reach the 2nd row controls you must reach behind while driving to adjust the heat. If you try to adjust from the front controls, it shuts off the overhead vents and only blows from one 3rd row floor vent, which doesn't provide much heat for the 2nd row passengers. The AC controls work properly when controlled from the front. I've taken my vehicle to Ford several times and they tried reprogramming, etc. and compared to other vehicles of the same model year and said they are functioning the same as mine. I believe this poses a serious safety risk as who is not going to attempt to reach back to provide some heat to a cold child?

My child will not be safe if a car crash would occur, she could potentially be released from the seat. It was reported to evenflo with pictures. They are claiming it is our fault and my 3 year old did it with something sharp. You cannot see the back of the straps as they enter the car seat. We do have photos of the proof.
