THIS HAS HAPPENED SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW. AFTER FILLING THE VEHICLE, A VERY STRONG GAS ODOR EMITS FROM THAT GAS TANK NEAR THE GAS CAP. AFTER PARKING IN THE GARAGE OVERNIGHT, THE ENTIRE GARAGE HAS A VERY STRONG ODOR AND IT EVEN LEAKS INTO THE HOUSE. DEALERSHIP HAS INSPECTED AND SAYS NOTHING IS WRONG, BUT IT IS DANGEROUS AS THERE HAS TO BE A LEAK OR SEAL ISSUE.

1/24/2020

EVERY TIME CAR IS FILLED UP, THERE IS A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE AS IT SITS IN MY GARAGE. AFTER DRIVING IT A BIT, THE ODOR GOES AWAY UNTIL I FILL IT AGAIN. I DON'T TOP IT OFF, YET THIS HAPPENS EVERY SINGLE TIME.

REPORTED THIS TO DEALER. THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG AT THE TIME. KEEPS HAPPENING : BLIND SPOT MONITORING AND CROSS TRAFFIC ALERT MALFUNCTION ALERTS

3/3/2019

THIS VEHICLES BLIND SPOT MONITOR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE IS NOT OPERATIONAL AND DOES NOT SHOW VEHICLES IN THE BLIND SPOT ON THE MIRROR OVER 70% OF THE TIME GIVING THE DRIVER A FALSE SENSE THE LANE IS CLEAR. IT APPEARS THE SYSTEM GETS WORSE THE LONGER YOU DRIVE AND ALMOST NO USABLE WHEN DRIVING OVER 40 MILES. THE DRIVER SIDE BLIND SPOT MONITOR SYSTEM WORKS AS IT SHOULD. UPON SOME RESEARCH ON LINE, IT APPEARS THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE AND TOYOTA INDICATES IT WORKS TO SPECS, BUT BASED OFF THE FACTORY MANUAL DOES NOT.

BOTH BLIND SPOT MONITORING AND CROSS TRAFFIC ALERT - MALFUNCTION ALERTS, KEEPS POPPING UP REGULARLY. MULTIPLE TRIPS TO THE DEALER, WITH NO RESOLUTION. TOYOTA INDICATES THAT THIS IS A PROB AND ARE WORKING ON AN SOLUTION. IT IS NOT CLEAR WHAT THAT IS. SEEMS LIKE ISSUE POPS UP MORE WHEN IT IS VERY COLD OR VERY WET. TOYOTA SAYS THEY ARE LOOKING INTO IT, BUT NOT SURE WHAT THEIR PLAN IS. TOYOTA CASE #1901292206 FOR TODAY.

(I FEEL THAT BSM ANGLE IS TOO NARROW OR SHORT AND IT WORKS ONLY WHEN THE OBJECT IS EXACT PARALLEL TO MY CAR.) - I WOULD LIKE THIS BSM TO BE ALWAYS ON AT ANY TIME AND CONDITION.

THESE ISSUES OCCUR CONSISTENTLY WHILE DRIVING ON A LOCAL SIDE STREETS AT LOW SPEEDS, BETWEEN 0-35 MPH. (1) WHEN EXECUTING A STOP AND GO EITHER AT A STOP LIGHT OR A STOP SIGN, MY 2019 AVALON XLE EMITS A "JERKING" MOTION BEFORE IT DECIDES TO KICK INTO GEAR. THE "JERKING" CAN EASILY BE FELT INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THERE ARE MULTIPLE DRIVERS EXPERIENCING THIS "JERKING". I THOUGHT THE "JERKING" WAS OCCURRING WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS WARNING UP, BUT "JERKING" OCCURS AT ALL TIMES. (2) WHEN TRAVELLING AT 30-35 MPH, AND AFTER RELEASING PRESSURE OFF THE ACCELERATOR, THE VEHICLE FEELS LIKE IF THE BRAKES ARE SLOWLY BEING APPLIED INSTEAD OF COASTING DOWN THE STREET. I BELIEVE THE TRANSMISSION IS DOWNSHIFTING IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT FEELS LIKE THE BRAKES ARE BEING APPLIED. THE ABOVE ISSUES HAVE BEEN OCCURRING SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE WITH LESS THAN 10 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. I WAS TOLD TO WAIT FOR A TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN TO BE PUBLISHED, BUT I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY GUARANTEE THAT SUCH A BULLETIN WOULD EVER BE PUBLISHED. I HAVE FILED SEVERAL CASES AT TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS AND WAS TOLD MY CASE WOULD BE REVIEWED BY THE TRANSMISSION ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT. AGAIN, NO GUARANTEE THAT THE TRANSMISSION ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT WOULD EVER REVIEW MY CASE. AND I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY RESPONSES OR FOLLOW UPS EMAILS FROM TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS RE: MY 2019 AVALON TRANSMISSION ISSUES.

I BOUGHT THIS CAR ABOUT 5 MONTHS AGO AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE UNTIL A MONTH AGO. EVERY TIME I'M DRIVING LESS THAN 35 MPH I FEEL A ROUGH DOWN SHIFT IS NOT THAT BAD, BUT I NOTICE IT. IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN I'M DRIVING SLOW, MORE SPECIFICALLY IN THE CITY.TOYOTA HASN'T SENT ANYTHING REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. I THOUGHT IT WOULD GO AWAY BUT IT HASN'T.

TOYOTA AVALON HYBRID WITH KEYLESS IGNITION. CAR IS SILENT BUT MAY STAY ON WHEN PARKED IN GARAGE. THERE IS NO WARNING SOUND OR LIGHT IF CAR IS LEFT ON AND CAR IS SILENT, BUT AS BATTERY DRAINS, THE ENGINE MAY COME ON 20 MIN LATER AND GENERATE CARBON MONOXIDE. I AM AN ALERT DRIVER BUT THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE. MORE THAN 17 TOYOTA OWNERS HAVE DIED OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING. THIS IS AN EASY SOFTWARE FIX. TOYOTA SAYS IT WILL FIX IN 2020, BUT THERE IS NO SOFTWARE FIX COMING FOR HYBRIDS ALREADY SOLD.

WHEN STARTING THE CAR AND PROCEEDING TO ACCELERATE THE CAR STALLS. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL INCIDENTS WHERE THE CAR HAS DONE THIS (EACH TIME BEING TAKEN TO SERVICE AT TOYOTA). ONE IN PARTICULAR ALMOST BEING HIT BY A TRUCK WHEN GOING FROM A RED LIGHT TO GREEN LIGHT.ANOTHER ONE TURNING OUT OF A PARKING LOT AND HAVING TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO CARS COMING MY DIRECTION IN FEAR OF BEING HIT WHILE TURNING AND CAR STALLING. THESE ISSUES HAVE BEEN TOO MANY SINCE I HAVE PURCHASED THE CAR. THIS MATTER HAS BEEN TAKEN UP TO CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND REVIEWING HOW MANY TIMES I HAVE TAKEN THIS VEHICLE IN THEY CONTINUE TO TELL ME THAT THEY HAVE NOT FAILED TO REPAIR MY CAR. I HAVE CONTINUED TO TAKE THE CAR TO BE SERVICED AND DIAGNOSTIC COMES UP WITH NO PROBLEMS IN THE COMPUTER SYSTEM. *I ALSO HAVE VIDEOS AND ALL OF MY SERVICE INVOICES REGARDING THE STALLING ISSUE THAT HAS YET TO BE CORRECTED.*

MY HUSBAND, AN 84 YEAR OLD, WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND GOT INTO A DOUBLE ACCIDENT. FIRST, HE WAS PARKED IN A PARKING LOT AND HE GOT IN THE CAR AND BACKED UP. AS HE BACKED UP HE HIT A VEHICLE PARKED BEHIND HIM CAUSING THAT VEHICLE TO HIT TWO OTHER VEHICLES. (PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE STILL WAITING FOR FULL POLICE REPORT FOR INFORMATION AS TO EXACTLY HOW FAR HE WOULD HAVE BACKED, BUT I BELIEVE NOT MUCH MORE THAN 1 TO 2 CAR LENGTHS.) THIS CAR HAD THE TOYOTA CARE PACKAGE INSTALLED, WHICH INCLUDED THE SAFE BACKING FEATURES TO SLOW A VEHICLE WHEN BACKING AND ANOTHER OBJECT IS BLOCKING THE PATH. MY QUESTION - WHAT HAPPENED TO THESE SAFETY FEATURES. MY HUSBAND LEFT THAT ACCIDENT AND DROVE ABOUT 1 BLOCK DOWN THE STREET, RUNNING THE END OF THE YELLOW LIGHT AND INTO RED LIGHT, AND HIT THE RIGHT REAR OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. HIS VEHICLE THEN DROVE OUT-OF-CONTROL INTO THE CORNER PLANTER AND HIT A SIGN, WHICH THEN FELL ONTO TWO VEHICLES. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT AFTER HE HIT THE TAIL OF THE VEHICLE, HIS VEHICLE SPED UP INTO THAT PLANTER AREA. AGAIN, THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH THE SAFETY FEATURES THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO SLOW OR STOP THE VEHICLE - BUT DIDN'T. MY HUSBAND WAS IN THE WRONG - AND SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DRIVING. HOWEVER, HE WAS THE ONE HURT THE WORST WITH 7 BROKEN RIBS, A BROKEN FEMUR, A BROKEN NOSE, AN INJURY TO THE SPLEEN AND BLEEDING ON THE BRAIN. MY CONCERN IS THE FUNCTIONING OF THE SAFETY FEATURES THAT TOYOTA DEALERS ARE TOUTING ABOUT THE VEHICLES.

8/5/2019

This incident has happened twice in three years. Hence it is a very rare occurrence. Both times involved the same events. Cruise control was on. I was traveling in the left lane of the interstate highway, approaching an 18-wheel truck which was in the right lane. When I was approximately 50 feet from the rear of the truck, the truck began to enter my lane. I suspect I was in the trucker's blind spot. My car did not sense the truck. The cruise control did not disengage. The brakes did not engage. But the MOST troublesome was that the car did not respond to my pressing on the brake pedal. I had to press 4 or 5 times before the cruise control would disengage and the brakes engage. Since I was traveling approximately 70 mph, the distance between my car and the truck (each time) closed rapidly. In the first instance, the truck tire hit my right front fender. I moved to the shoulder of the road and eventually the car braked. In the second case, I avoided collision by about 10 feet. I use the cruise control frequently and in EVERY other circumstance, the sensors on my car have worked correctly and disengaged the cruise control and I have never had a problem with breaking. I suspect a blind spot in the sensor system but why, only in this situation, does the brake system fail to disengage the cruise control when i press on the brake is a very troublesome mystery to me. Answering question on web page: My safety - life threatening, No dealer consultation, Regular maintenance schedule maintained, No warnings.

After starting car, from being parked in parking garage from 8am-5pm, the Pre Collision warning system light turned on. Vehicle currently has 20k miles on the odometer. There are numerous records in the car's onboard history of this device failing during car startup. Drove home, started next day with no incident. System is unreliable. According to the Infotainment system, the car seems to report the failure every few months.

Blind spot monitor sensors not positioned properly, cause bsm and rcta to have issues dealer said their was a TSB for it but that they couldn't cover it and I need to pay out of pocket to fix a defective safety system

12/19/2022

A year ago my 2019 Toyota Avalon started displaying a message that the RCD (rear camera detection) was unavailable. I tried working with the dealership that sold me the car, but they ignored me. I went to another Toyota dealership and they said it would cost approximately $2000, but could not guarantee it would fix the issue. I’ve seen online that 1000’s of Toyota owners with the same system have had similar problems, and Toyota frequently responds with, “It’s a rolling computer, and very advanced.” Some were fixed by recalibration, but many have a more serious problem. All the stories are only the people that have posted about it. It’s probably Toyota’s biggest problem. My car was under warranty when it began, but health issues and restrictions kept me from getting the attention of the general manager since I was ignored by others. I feel this is serious enough and has effected numerous people that it warrants an investigation. People are relying on a system that doesn’t work properly, and some have been hurt and many others will be negatively affected by it.

The sunroof of my 2019 Toyota Avalon is defective. It is available for inspection upon request. My safety, as well as the safety of my passengers, has been put at risk. My problem has been confirmed by Sheehy Toyota of Fredericksburg. No warning lamps or messages to indicate sunroof problem. The driver side of my sunroof keeps clogging. I first took my vehicle to Toyota Sheehy of Fredericksburg on 1/3/2023. Sunroof tray was found to have a buildup of organic detritus, causing drains of sunroof tray to be clogged and allowing rainwater to spill over into interior. Sheehy technician cleared the sunroof tray and drains of organic material. Drains were now flowing properly. Technician claimed that sunroof would not have to be drained for at least two years. There was standing water and a heavy mildew smell in the car. Sheehy refused to clean/drain carpet of water. I took it to a detailer and had the detailer vacuum and clean the carpet. Less than a month later, I started experiencing the same issues -- wet carpeting on the floorboard. I took my vehicle to Sheehy Toyota of Fredericksburg on 2/7/2023. Technician told me that the driver side of the sunroof was clogged. Technician claimed that he fixed the clogged drain of the sunroof. Technician suggested that my sunroof got clogged because I have only driven my car 140 miles this month. Not a rational explanation. He recommended that I replace the carpet due to mold concerns. Why would I replace the carpet if there is a strong possibility of having wet carpet every few weeks? Technician insists that wet floor is not coming from any source other than the sunroof. I suspect that my sunroof is defective. I should not have to worry about wet carpet in my car everyday that we experience rainshowers. Sheehy Toyota insists that nothing is wrong with the structural integrity of the sunroof and that external factors are to blame.

2019 Toyota Avalon XSE with 41,400 miles. Complete failure of the Climate Control Panel. No buttons or lights would work, resulting in lack of any fan, heat, air conditioning, window defroster, mirror defroster or seat heat. Found no fuses blown. On one occasion since then both seat heat lights came on indicating full heat but did not produce any heat. Two days later Panel began to work normally for a 1 hour drive. Later this day there was another complete failure of the same panel. Took car to dealership the next day and panel functioned normally enroute. When dealership diagnosed the problem the Climate Control Panel had failed again and the problem could not be duplicated. No trouble codes were stored in the system. They performed a master reset of the system thinking an update may have been corrupt. Panel worked when leaving the dealership later this day. The next morning the Panel initially did not work, but 20 minutes into a 1 hour drive it started working normally. That evening the Panel failed again on vehicle startup and has not worked since. Took it back to the dealership this morning and did not turn vehicle off, thinking the failure might show up in the car’s system until the service advisor could drive it to a maintenance bay. After 3 hours the problem could not be diagnosed. The lead mechanic contacted Toyota corporate to inquire if this problem has been encountered previously and for a possible solution. Overall this may not be a safety issue warranting any further action. However, if the windows or mirrors were to fog up, there would be no defroster capability for either of these. In this situation it could quickly become a dangerous situation while the vehicle is moving. This should be investigated further.

The contact owns a 2019 Toyota Avalon. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, the "parking brake malfunction" warning flashed. The contact proceeded to his destination and shifted the vehicle into park (P) but did not engage the parking brake for fear that it might not disengage. The contact drove the vehicle to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that there had been a malfunction of the Parking Brake or Cruise Control Malfunction warning message on the MID (multi-information display) with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) C13B0 (Electric Parking Brake ECU Malfunction) NHTSA ID Number: 10172860 (Parking Brake). The contact was advised that the remedy required a software update of the ECU. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,500.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: WARNINGS

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING

After starting to accelerate from a stop light ,the Dashboard had a warning message that the accelerator and brake pedals were pressed simultaneously. The acceleration stopped and the car slowed automatically. After a few seconds the warning indicator went away and the car could accelerate. The cars behind my auto had to stop suddenly. At the time. I though that I might have hit both petals at the same time. When it happened again I opened an incident report with Toyota. Incident opened on 07-19-25 Case # 250719000440. The Toyota rep told me it should be take to a Toyota dealer to diagmose any error codes. The next time the same problem occured I took it to my Toyota dealer and was told there were no error codes to indicate a problem. I have also taken the car to a local repair shop after the problem happened and was shown there were no stored errror codes. The dealer wants to have my auto for an extende time to reproduce the problem. If they need error codes to solve the issue but no error codes are recorded when the problem occurs what can they determine? I am hoping that there are other Toyota Avalon owners which might have had the same issue.

FAQ

What are the most common owner complaints for the 2019 Toyota Avalon?

The most reported complaint category for the 2019 Toyota Avalon is FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM, with 16 owner reports. That is about 18% of all complaints logged here. Other recurring themes include FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, UNKNOWN OR OTHER.

Are complaints about the 2019 Toyota Avalon a serious warning sign?

Potentially. 47 complaint reports fall into higher-attention systems such as brakes, steering, engine, powertrain, fuel, suspension, airbags, or electrical components. That does not prove every vehicle has a defect, but repeated complaints in those systems justify a more careful pre-purchase inspection.

How should buyers use complaint data for the 2019 Toyota Avalon?

Use complaints as an early pattern to investigate, not a standalone verdict. Start with the top complaint categories, compare those themes against the recall report and maintenance guide, then inspect service records for evidence that the same problem areas were already addressed.
