SUBWOOFER AND AMP OVERHEATED DURING NORMAL USE CAUSING WIRES TO BURN AND MELT CAUSING A SIGNIFICANT FIRE SAFETY ISSUE. THIS IS SEEMINGLY SIMILAR TO THE ISSUES THAT LEAD TO A 2017 RECALL OF ALMOST 10,000 2015 MODEL YEAR WRXS

6/1/2018

DRIVING AND ON A TURN BETWEEN 35-40 MPH MY WRX FREAKED OUT. THE DASH LIGHT UP LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE, THE LANE TRACKING ALONG WITH THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL INDICATORS FLASHED, AND THE DASH SAID EYESIGHT UNAVAILABLE. IT FELT LIKE I COULDN'T CONTROL THE CAR AND ALMOST FELT AS IF IT ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN. I HIT THE BREAKS AND THE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND ENDED UP IN A DITCH. THE FRONT OF THE CAR RAN THROUGH BRUSH AND ENDED IN FRONT OF A TREE. THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED ON THE SIDE BUT WERE DELAYED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE UNTIL THE CAR STOPPED. MY FIANCE WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. FRONT AIRBAGS DID NOT GO OFF EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A FRONT COLLISION. THE CAR WAS ON A COUNTRY ROAD WITH OTHER TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF IT.

THROW OUT BEARING HAS NOW GONE OUT FOR THE 3X. SUBARU OF AMERICA DID EVERYTHING TO NOT REPLACE UNDER WARRANTY. GRIND IN 3RD GEAR NOT DUE TO DRIVER ERROR.

8/14/2018

PREMATURE CLUTCH FAILURE. TSB OUT ON CLUTCH BUT DEALERSHIP WILL NOT PREFORM REPAIRS. NEEDS TO BE A FULL RECALL. NOT CAUSED BY DRIVER ERROR.

CLUTCH ON MANUAL TRANSMISSION HAS BURNED OUT TWICE IN 13000 MILES. DEALER BLAMES DRIVER AND IS NOT LOOKING HARD FOR OTHER CAUSES. WE ARE 100% POSITIVE THIS IS NOT CAUSED BY DRIVER ERROR. HAVE BEEN STRANDED ON HIGHWAY TWICE IN LESS THAN A YEAR.

8/15/2018

STALLING. I HAVE A 2017 SUBARU WRX CVT. I WAS AT A RED LIGHT AND THE CAR IDLED HARD AND STALLED, AGAIN THIS IS A CVT NOT A MANUAL.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 SUBARU WRX. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN AND WAS UNCONTROLLABLE. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED, BUT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO RESPOND. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO A DITCH. THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AND ALL THE WARNING INDICATORS FLASHED AND ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. ALSO, "EYESIGHT" NOT AVAILABLE WAS DISPLAYED. THE PASSENGER SUSTAINED HAND INJURIES, BUT MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS NOT RECEIVED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE LOCAL DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 37,000.

5/2/2019

I RECENTLY EXPERIENCED A STEERING RACK FAILURE DUE TO LEAKING SEALS ON THE GEAR ASSEMBLY ON MY CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED 2017 SUBARU STI. THE POWER STEERING FAILED TO OPERATE BOTH IN MOTION ON THE HIGHWAY AND AT SLOW SPEEDS IN A PARKING LOT AND LOCAL STREETS. THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST MAKES IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO SAFELY CONTROL AND CHANGE OF DIRECTION FOR THE VEHICLE. BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE AND THAT OF MANY OTHERS I KNOW IN THE SUBARU COMMUNITY THIS IS A COMMON FAILURE POINT ON THE LAST TWO GENERATIONS OF THESE CARS. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY SUBARU CONTINUES TO IGNORE THIS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS PART FAILURE AND HAS DONE NOTHING TO HELP OWNERS LIKE MYSELF WHEN THE ISSUE OCCURS.

THE SIDE MIRRORS SHAKE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS RENDERING THEM USELESS. I'VE WORKED WITH THE DEALERSHIP TO FIX THE ISSUE ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THEY ALL DO THIS. I THEN HAD THE MIRROR ASSEMBLY REPLACED BUT STILL HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. THIS SEVERELY INHIBITS MY VISION WHILE DRIVING.

9/7/2018

I PARKED MY CAR IN THE DRIVEWAY AFTER WORK WITHOUT A CRACKED WINDSHIELD. I WENT TO GO TO WORK IN THE MORNING WITH A CRACKED WINDSHIELD. NO IMPACT MARKS.... IT IS AS IF MY WINDSHIELD SPONTANEOUSLY CRACKED WHILE PARKED IN 50 DEGREE WEATHER. WHAT IF SOMETHING ACTUALLY HITS MY WINDSHIELD??? AM I SAFE??? HOW OFTEN DO I GET TO REPLACE THIS DEFECTIVE DESIGN??? *TR

UNKNOWN. Was hit very hard, approximately at 70mph, on rear passenger corner of car, hit caused my vehicle to slide and hit the guardrail on front end of vehicle, and no airbags deployed at any point in collision. Airbags are intact. I have included close up pictures of the airbag crash sensors on the front of the vehicle if they are of any use.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

The Direct Injection Engine causes valves to become coated in carbon build-up, unlike indirect injections which constantly clean the valves. This issue then results in the sudden loss of power and engine stalls (often when attempting to accelerate from low speeds) which are extremely dangerous when attempting to merge or turn in traffic. Subaru has not addressed the issue but based on online searches it appears to be a major issue for all 2.0l direct injection engines.

12/14/2022

I have a 2017 Subaru WRX that stalls while driving (including at highway speeds) 2 to 3 times every day on my commute to work through the mountains. This has led the vehicle to skid sideways and lose control. When I looked into this problem, I found that Subaru has a recall on its fuel pumps for 2018 to 2020 Subaru WRX vehicles but somehow my VIN does not appear to be considered AN affected vehicle. This issue is life-threatening, and I believe the model years eligible for recall, must not have captured one year earlier model with presumably the same faulty fuel pump. I believe the recall needs to be expanded.

DRIVER SEAT CUSHIONING HAS COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM THE METAL FRAME OF THE SEAT AS WELL AS THE MIDDLE PORTION OF THE SEAT THAT IS SAT ON HAS DROPPED AND RESTING AND THE FRAME OF THE SEAT...VERY UNCOMFORTABLE AND HURTS MY BACK TO SIT IN THE SEAT. ALSO, SUSPENSION HAS BECOME VERY ROUGH OVER THE SMALLEST BUMPS. MILEAGE: 81,000

6/21/2019

I HAVE ISSUES WITH SURGING, AC SYSTEM, SUSPENSION, EXTREME TIRE WEAR, TIRES WEAR UNEVENLY, STEERING ASSIST, INABILITY TO ALIGN STEERING, WINDOWS ROLL DOWN FOR NO REASON AND WON'T ROLL BACK UP UNLESS YOU ROLL THEM ALL THE WAY DOWN AND THEN UP BUT THEY USUALLY JUST ROLL BACK DOWN HALF WAY AGAIN (IT'S A BATTLE!) WINDOWS SCRATCH JUST FROM DUST SO THEY LOOK HAZY AND WINDSHIELDS COST ALMOST $2000 WITH ALL SAFETY CAMERA JUNK. ONLY ONE AIRCON VENT BLOWS COLD AIR WHILE ALL OTHERS JUST BLOW AIR. THIS CAR WAS A LEMON BEFORE 2018 ENDED. SUBARU REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE PROBLEMS WHILE UNDER EXTENDED BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY. I TRIED TO FILE LEMON LAW AND LOST BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T SAVE MY COMPLAINT VISITS IN COMPUTER SYSTEM. IM CERTAIN THAT WAS INTENTIONAL SINCE THEY ARE THE LEMON KINGS! SUBARU IS A TERRIBLE COMPANY NOW AND I RECOMMEND YOU DON'T OWN ONE. THE SURGING IS VERY DANGEROUS AS THE CAR LITERALLY HOPS AND SOMETIMES YOU PUSH ACCELERATOR AND NOTHING HAPPENS FOR WAY TOO LONG. DANGEROUS WHEN PULLING INTO TRAFFIC. FIGHTING WITH WINDOWS WHILE DRIVING IS ALSO DANGEROUS. LED LIGHTS ARE THE WRONG COLOR SO IT'S HARD TO SEE MANY THINGS AT NIGHT. THE BATTERY IS JUNK OPEN TOP AND LEAKS ACID EVERYWHERE ROTTING OUT THE BATTERY TRAY. FOR $42,000 YOU WOULD EXPECT A MUCH BETTER CAR.

THE BEARINGS WERE REPLACED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE SAME DEALER REPLACED THE BEARINGS AGAIN, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO DRIVER ERROR AND REQUIRED THE CONTACT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COST. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES AND SIDED WITH THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT THE OWNER'S EXPENSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 22,000.

What are the most common owner complaints for the 2017 Subaru WRX?

The most reported complaint category for the 2017 Subaru WRX is ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, with 14 owner reports. That is about 20% of all complaints logged here. Other recurring themes include ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, POWER TRAIN, ENGINE.

Are complaints about the 2017 Subaru WRX a serious warning sign?

Potentially. 42 complaint reports fall into higher-attention systems such as brakes, steering, engine, powertrain, fuel, suspension, airbags, or electrical components. That does not prove every vehicle has a defect, but repeated complaints in those systems justify a more careful pre-purchase inspection.

How should buyers use complaint data for the 2017 Subaru WRX?

Use complaints as an early pattern to investigate, not a standalone verdict. Start with the top complaint categories, compare those themes against the recall report and maintenance guide, then inspect service records for evidence that the same problem areas were already addressed.
