I PURCHASED A 2015 HYUNDAI ELANTRA ON NOVEMBER 26TH, 2014. THE CAR WAS BRAND NEW WHEN I PURCHASED IT. ON DECEMBER 23RD I NOTICED THAT MY BRAKE LIGHTS WOULD NOT TURN OFF AFTER HAVING PARKED AND REMOVED THE KEY. I WAS UNABLE TO GET THE LIGHT TO TURN OFF, BUT I HAD A TRIP SCHEDULED TO VISIT FAMILY DURING THE HOLIDAYS. I WAS FORCED TO LEAVE THE CAR AT MY HOUSE IN ITS PRESENT STATE. WHEN I REACHED MY DESTINATION ON DECEMBER 24TH I CALLED HYUNDAI (LITHIA SPRINGS) TO TELL THEM ABOUT THE ISSUES AND TO ASK THEM HOW THEY WANTED TO HANDLE THIS ISSUE. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME TO BRING THE CAR IN ON JANUARY 3RD. WHEN I RETURNED TO GEORGIA I BROUGHT THE CAR TO HYUNDAI. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE I COULD SMELL A STRONG ODOR REMINISCENT OF SPOILED MILK. WHEN I ARRIVED AT THE DEALERSHIP THEY EXAMINED THE CAR AND INITIALLY TOLD ME THAT THE ISSUE WAS WITH THE BRAKE CLUTCH NOT DEPRESSING PROPERLY. AFTER THE TECHNICIAN REPLACED THIS PART HE RETURNED TO TELL METHAT HE WAS UNABLE TO CORRECT THE ISSUE AND THAT HE SUSPECTED IT TO BE AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE. HE REQUESTED THAT I LEAVE THE CAR WITH HIM SO THAT IT COULD BE WORKED ON AND PLACED ME IN A LOANER VEHICLE. I RECEIVED A CALL TODAY (JANUARY 6TH, 2015) AND WAS TOLD THAT THE ISSUE HAD BEEN ISOLATED AND THAT THE CAR WAS NOT SEALED PROPERLY AND WATER HAD CAUSED THE ELECTRICAL ISSUES I WAS HAVING. [XXX]. TOLD ME THAT THE CAR WOULD NEED TO HAVE THE WINDSHIELD REMOVED, CARPET REMOVED, DRIED, AND RESEALED. I EXPRESSED MY CONCERN WITH THIS AND LET HIM KNOW THAT I WANTED THE CAR REPLACED IMMEDIATELY, TO WHICH HE DID NOT REPLY. HE TOLD ME THAT HYUNDAI MANUFACTURING WOULD MOST LIKELY NOT REPLACE MY BRAND NEW VEHICLE AND THAT ALL HE COULD DO WAS TRY TO FIX THE ISSUES. I AM TRULY UNHAPPY AND WANT MY MONEY BACK OR A BRAND NEW CAR. I HAVEN'T EVEN DRIVEN THIS CAR 1,000 MILES AND NOT ONLY AM I WITHOUT A CAR. I BEGAN MY LEASE ON MY ELANTRA IN SEPT OF 2014. AT MY YEAR ANNIVERSARY I HAD IT SERVICED BY THE DEALER OF THE LEASE AND WAS GIVEN A CLEAN BILL OF CAR HEALTH. HOWEVER, ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THE CAR HAD, AS I CALLED IT, "A MIND OF ITS OWN" MEANING THAT WHILE I WAS DRIVING, USUALLY SOMEWHERE AROUND 40-55 MPH WITHOUT ME PUSHING DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL THE CAR WOULD ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. IT WOULD STOP AS SOON AS I COMPLETELY LET OFF THE GAS PEDAL BUT IT HAPPENED ENOUGH TO BE CONSIDERED STRANGE. I WAS PLANNING TO ASK THE DEALER ABOUT IT AT MY NEXT OIL CHANGE. NOT NECESSARY NOW! SUNDAY AFTERNOON 10/18/15, I WENT TO START THE CAR AND IT SPUTTERED AND STALLED OUT. I TURNED THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AGAIN AND IT REPEATED. AFTER THE 3RD TIME AND GIVING IT SOME GAS THE CAR STARTED AND RAN OK. I HAD 3 STOPS THAT I MADE, EACH TIME THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF AND BACK ON WITH NO ISSUE. I RETURNED HOME AND NOT EVEN 5 MINUTES AFTER THE CAR WAS PARKED AND SHUT OFF, THERE WERE FLAMES SHOOTING OUT BETWEEN THE HOOD AND WINDSHIELD. I HIT THE FIRE EMERGENCY ON MY HOUSE ALARM SYSTEM TO SIGNAL FOR THE FIRE DEPT AND THEN RAN OUTSIDE WITH MY HUSBAND AND 2 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS, EMPTYING ONE AND HAVING ZERO EFFECT ON THE FIRE. MY HUSBAND THEN TURNED THE HOSE ON AND WAS TRYING TO CONTAIN THE FIRE WITH THE HOSE WATER. IN THE 10 MINUTES IT TOOK FOR THE FIRE DEPT TO GET THERE, THE ENTIRE FRONT END WAS LITERALLY A SHELL OF REMAINING METAL AND DRIPPING MELTED PLASTIC. THE ENTIRE WINDSHEILD EXPLODED FROM THE HEAT OF THE FIRE AND WAS INSIDE THE CAR. INSURANCE INSPECTOR SAYS THE SOURCE CAME FROM BEHIND THE BATTERY - WHICH HE SAID WAS EITHER THE ELECTRIC OR COMPUTER PANEL. EITHER WAY.. IT WAS A SCARY SITUATION. 10 MINUTES IS NOT A VERY LONG TIME TO HAVE THE ENTIRE FRONT END DISINTEGRATE FROM FIRE

MY CAR HAS BEEN IN A COLLISION SHOP SINCE THAT DAY. THE SHOP CALLED AND SAID THERE WOULD BE A DELAY BECAUSE THE AXLE THE MANUFACTURE SENT WAS DAMAGED!! THE SHOP HAD TO ORDER ANOTHER AXLE . I WENT ON LINE TO DETERMINE IF THIS MODEL HAS HAD OTHER REPORT OF AXLE AND SUSPENSION DEFECTS AND THERE WAS ONE REPORT THAT WAS EXACTLY THE SAME AS MINE. On February 17, 2023, my vehicle was broken into and damaged because thieves tried to highjack the car using a now common method of the end of a USB cable in the ignition. The passenger rear window, the steering column, and the key ignition were all damaged, and I had my vehicle towed to a Hyundai dealership. Nearly all 2011-2021 Kia and Hyundai vehicles are made easy to operate without a key, to steal, and to vandalize. This security vulnerability has resulted in Kia and Hyundai owners paying for repairs (even with insurance, owners need to pay the deductible) and higher insurance premiums. Hyundai and Kia did not disclose this defect, which is a material fact, and a fact that a reasonable person would rely on when purchasing a vehicle, consequently making these vehicles easy to steal, unsafe, and worth less than they should be. The service writer at the dealership informed me that it could take 30-45 days to get the parts since this type of vandalism has increased significantly over the last six months. It has become well-known that these thefts are due to security flaws (re: failure to implement standard security measures and install anti-theft devices) in Kia and Hyundai vehicles, leaving them notably susceptible to theft. Kia and Hyundai owners, including myself, are left with limited time use of rental cars during repairs, oftentimes because of the delay in the delivery of parts. This situation also leaves Kia and Hyundai owners with higher insurance rates (or being simply denied of obtaining insurance) because of these vehicles.

FAQ

What are the most common owner complaints for the 2015 Hyundai Elantra?

The most reported complaint category for the 2015 Hyundai Elantra is ENGINE, with 85 owner reports. That is about 25% of all complaints logged here. Other recurring themes include ENGINE, UNKNOWN OR OTHER, SERVICE BRAKES.

Are complaints about the 2015 Hyundai Elantra a serious warning sign?

Potentially. 229 complaint reports fall into higher-attention systems such as brakes, steering, engine, powertrain, fuel, suspension, airbags, or electrical components. That does not prove every vehicle has a defect, but repeated complaints in those systems justify a more careful pre-purchase inspection.

How should buyers use complaint data for the 2015 Hyundai Elantra?

Use complaints as an early pattern to investigate, not a standalone verdict. Start with the top complaint categories, compare those themes against the recall report and maintenance guide, then inspect service records for evidence that the same problem areas were already addressed. If the same issue appears repeatedly across complaints and recalls, treat it as a real ownership-risk flag.

229 complaint reports involve higher-attention systems such as brakes, steering, engine, powertrain, fuel, suspension, airbags, or electrical components, which is enough to justify a focused inspection before purchase.
