I have replaced my thermostat four times in the last 18 months and I had it towed to the dealership again this morning for the same overheating problems.

The contact owns a 2017 Genesis G90. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was smoke coming from underneath the hood. The oil warning light intermittently illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that the engine was leaking oil and advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that there was oil leaking from the turbo chargers and the engine block. The contact was not aware of what needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.

ON 06/10/2017 WE PURCHASED A G90 GENESIS FROM SOUTH CHARLOTTE HYUNDAI AT 8525 SOUTH BLVD CHARLOTTE NC. THE TEAM WAS VERY CONVINCING ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THE VEHICLE & THE 10-YEAR WARRANTY. THE CAR WAS A VERY EXPENSIVE CAR COSTING $74,678.47, BUT WE WERE ASSURED IT WAS THE BEST CAR & WARRANTY IN THE BUSINESS. WE STARTING TO HAVE CRASH SENSORS GOING OFF EVEN AT TIMES WHEN NO OTHER CARS WERE EVEN NEAR THE CAR. THEY INDICATED THAT THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM, BUT THE 'FALSE' CRASH WARNING PERSISTED & EVEN EXPERIENCED THE CAR AUTO STOPPING IN AN INTERSECTION WHEN IN FACT IT WAS A FALSE SENSOR AS NO CAR WAS EVEN IN FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THIS BECAME LIFE THREATENING & SERIOUS. SOUTH CHARLOTTE HYUNDAI HAD THE CAR IN THE SHOP YET AGAIN & THEN INDICATED THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM NOR COULD THEY RECREATE IT. SO, THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM & THEY HAD DONE ALL THEY COULD. BECAUSE THE CRASH SENSORS STAY ON FOR AN EXTENDED TIME ONCE THEY GO OFF, WE WERE ABLE TO RECORD A VIDEO OF WHAT WAS GOING. THIS WAS SHARED WITH THEM & EVEN AFTER THE VIDEO THEY INDICATED THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM EVEN BROUGHT IN 'FACTORY EXPERTS' & SO WE SHOULD BE GOOD. WE EXPERIENCED OTHER CRASH LOCKUPS & AT ONE POINT GOING DOWN THE INTERSTATE WITH NO CARS AROUND THEY CRASH SENSORS WENT AWRY. OVER THE COURSE OF THE PAST YEAR THE CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP MORE THAN 5 TIMES. I AM ATTACHING THE LATEST ONE WHERE THE CAR WAS IN THEIR POSSESSION FOR OVER 14 DAY & THE ORDER SHOWS THEY REPLACED SENSORS. UNFORTUNATELY, WE JUST RECORDED ANOTHER FALSE CRASH EVENT. THERE SEEMS TO BE THE POSSIBILITY THAT THERE IS EITHER AN ISSUE WITH SOUTH CHARLOTTE HYUNDAI OR PERHAPS A BROADER ISSUE WITH THE SENSORS IN THE GENESIS LINE OF VEHICLES. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT HYUNDAI IS AWARE OF OUR SITUATION & SEEMS TO BE NON-RESPONSIVE WHICH MAKES US THINK THERE IS MORE TO THE FALSE CRASH WARNINGS & ABRUPT STOPS.

The contact owns a 2017 Genesis G90. The contact stated while the vehicle was turned off, locked, and parked in the driveway, he pressed the trunk release button on the key fob to open the trunk while he was standing behind the vehicle. However, the vehicle inadvertently rolled backward independently, and hit the contact, causing him to flip up in the air, and the contact fell down at the curb on the driver's side of the driveway. The vehicle continued to roll down, rolled up the hill of the driveway, rolled back down, and crashed into the wall and mailbox box. The contact stated that bystanders assisted him up. The bystanders also attempted to open the vehicle; however, the vehicle was still locked. The vehicle was not occupied at the time of the failure. The contact sought medical assistance the next day and was informed that he had sustained separation of muscles on the right side of his back. There was no police report filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot, where it was totaled. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and sent a field inspector to inspect the vehicle. The field inspector informed the contact that the EDR would not indicate the cause of the failure as it could not operate while the vehicle was turned off. The manufacturer later contacted the contact and informed him that they could not assist as the EDR did not reveal the cause of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

TRANSMISSION CAN POP OUT OF GEAR WHEN THE SHIFT HANDLE IS INADVERTENTLY NUDGED WHILE DRIVING. ALSO, WHEN SHIFTING INTO GEAR WHEN STOPPED, THE TRANSMISSION WILL REVERT TO NEUTRAL (POP INTO) IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION UNLESS YOU HOLD THE HANDLE FORCEFULLY AND IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. EVEN WITH YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE. BOTH HAVE RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. DEALER HAS NO SOLUTION. GENESIS HAS NO RESPONSE.

4/22/2018

WHEN TURNING RIGHT OR LEFT FROM A STOP, THE TRANSMISSION REFUSES TO RESPOND AT TIMES...IT SLOGS DOWN AND WILL NOT SHIFT TO ACCELERATE IN A LOWER GEAR...AN EMERGENCY SITUATION COULD KILL SOMEONE. THE DEALER HAS NO SOLUTION. GENESIS HAS NO RESPONSE. THIS HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES SINCE 7/2017.

6/16/2019

November 2, 2025 at 12:19 PM, I received a call from the owner, Jose, who accused me of “assault” against his employee Toni—despite the fact that I have never been physically near Toni. I’ve only been calling to follow up on the unresolved safety issues: no fluids, bad brakes (which they claimed to have repaired), and rear tires with no tread at all. When they repaired the brakes, I would have gladly purchased new tires had I been informed.

On November 3rd at 8:23 PM, I found myself stranded on the side of the highway once again—this time due to exposed tread and a large bubble on the tire. It’s deeply troubling that a vehicle was sold in such unsafe condition. This raises serious questions about the seller’s standards and accountability.

November 5, 2023 at 12:33pm third flat tire and the spare blew out into pieces after one day.

On November 8, 2025 at 11:30am, the second bald tire completely blew out while I was driving on 595. This was not just an inconvenience—it was a life‑threatening situation. I could have been killed. The fact that this dealership allowed such unsafe tires to be sold or installed shows a complete disregard for customer safety. This is absolutely unacceptable. Their negligence puts lives at risk. Avoid this dealership at all costs

AFTER ENABLING THE STEERING ASSIST, LAST YEAR, WE NOTICED IT PULLING MORE AGGRESSIVELY THAN IT DID WHEN WE FIRST PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. WE DISABLED THE FEATURE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS THEN ENABLED IT AGAIN THIS WEEK. TODAY, WHILE MY WIFE AND FRIEND WERE DRIVING THE STEERING/LANE ASSIST PULLED THE WHEEL AGGRESSIVELY TOWARD THE OUTSIDE LANE, CAUSING THE CAR TO HYDROPLANE. LUCKILY MY WIFE WAS ABLE, AFTER THE CAR SPUN AROUND 360 DEGREES SEVERAL TIMES, TO CORRECT ENOUGH TO STAY OUT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND ENDED SIDEWAYS OFF THE HIGHWAY, SHAKEN UP BUT NO MAJOR INJURIES. THE VEHICLE IS BEING TOWED TO THE NEAREST GENESIS DEALER.

10/26/2019

Steering wheel sticks when making left or right turn. Have to manually return the steering wheel back to a straight/neutral position. Extremely dangerous! If you don’t manually align the steering wheel quickly you will lose control, go off road, or hit another vehicle on any turn. Issue is consistent and wide spread problem among their vehicles after further investigation into the brand.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

SINCE TAKING DELIVERY OF THE VEHICLE, THE AUTO-LEVELING HEADLIGHTS DO NOT STAY IN ADJUSTMENT, LEADING TO THE LOW 'BEAM' OF LIGHT BEING EITHER WAY TOO LOW, AND THEREFORE NOT ILLUMINATING THE ROADWAY SAFELY, OR BEING TOO HIGH (MOST RECENTLY THE LOW BEAMS WERE HIGHER THAN THE HIGH BEAMS). THE DEALER HAS CONSULTED WITH HYUNDAI, AND THEY FREELY ADMIT TO ME THAT THEY CANNOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THE CAR HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER 5-6 TIMES, WHERE THEY MANUALLY ADJUST THE LIGHTS WITH A SCREWDRIVER, BUT THE LIGHTS ON THEIR OWN RE SELF-ADJUST TO EITHER TOO LOW, OR TOO HIGH AND IN NEITHER CASE THE ROADWAY BEING SAFELY ILLUMINATED. MOST OF THE TIME THEY ARE TOO LOW. I HAVE GOTTEN 4 FLATS BECAUSE OF POOR ILLUMINATION. I AM UNABLE TO DRIVER THE CAR AT NIGHT. PHOTOS ATTACHED SHOW THE BEAM IN THE NYC HOLLAND TUNNEL, SHOWING THE LOW BEAM LOW, AND NOT ILLUMINATING PAST ABOUT 75'. I HAVE MANY OTHER PHOTOS, PLUS DASH CAM VIDEOS SHOWING THE PROBLEM.

* Recall Campaign Number : [018G, 019G] I. Statement of Complaint This complaint concerns a failure in a critical safety-related component that was previously addressed under a mandatory manufacturer recall, and the subsequent refusal by the authorized dealership to provide a second no-charge repair for the same repeated failure. II. Chronology of Events * Original Recall Repair: Approximately thirteen (13) months ago, 8/30/2024 the vehicle was taken to Anaheim Hyundai to address a safety recall concerning the oil feed pipe. The prescribed remedy, a replacement of the oil feed pipe, was completed at no cost under the recall campaign. * Second Failure (Current Event): On or about 10/6/2025, while the vehicle’s engine was running, I observed smoke rising from the engine compartment. The vehicle was immediately taken to a local independent mechanic who diagnosed the issue as a burst oil feed pipe—the identical component subject to the prior recall. * Attempted Repair at Anaheim Hyundai (Denial): The vehicle was then towed back to Anaheim Hyundai. The service department acknowledged that the component failure was the same issue addressed in the previous recall. However, the dealership has now refused to perform the repair under the recall process, citing a specific 12-month policy set by Hyundai Motor America regarding the warranty on recall remedies, which has now expired. III. Request for Intervention The failure of the previously installed recall remedy (the oil feed pipe) exposes the vehicle to the original safety risk, including potential engine failure and fire hazards, and the manufacturer’s refusal to re-remedy the defect effectively negates the purpose of the mandatory recall. I request that NHTSA investigate this matter and compel Hyundai Motor America to: * Honor the original safety recall and provide a permanent, effective remedy at no charge to the consumer. * Clarify the consumer's right regarding the warranty on recall remedies, fails after install

FAQ

What are the most common owner complaints for the 2017 Genesis G90?

The most reported complaint category for the 2017 Genesis G90 is ENGINE, with 5 owner reports. That is about 16% of all complaints logged here. Other recurring themes include ENGINE, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, UNKNOWN OR OTHER.

Are complaints about the 2017 Genesis G90 a serious warning sign?

Potentially. 18 complaint reports fall into higher-attention systems such as brakes, steering, engine, powertrain, fuel, suspension, airbags, or electrical components. That does not prove every vehicle has a defect, but repeated complaints in those systems justify a more careful pre-purchase inspection.

How should buyers use complaint data for the 2017 Genesis G90?

Use complaints as an early pattern to investigate, not a standalone verdict. Start with the top complaint categories, compare those themes against the recall report and maintenance guide, then inspect service records for evidence that the same problem areas were already addressed. If the same issue appears repeatedly across complaints and recalls, treat it as a real ownership-risk flag.

18 complaint reports involve higher-attention systems such as brakes, steering, engine, powertrain, fuel, suspension, airbags, or electrical components, which is enough to justify a focused inspection before purchase.
